SSF is superior to Yabause and was initially superior to Mednafen with its early Saturn core versions for compatibility, but SSF is closed-source and was made for Windows only until it was released to Android devices in 28 January 2021. These included the Mednafen versions from the late 2010s and onwards with much improved Saturn compatibility, and two WIP derivatives of the old Yabause base called Kronos and Yaba Sanshiro.
Saturn emulation is also better than ever thanks to continuous development of several emulators like: Mednafen, SSF, Yabause and YabaSanshiro.SSF was once renowned as being the best Saturn emulator from its inception in the early 2000s till around mid-2010s when a slate of newer and open-source Saturn emulation software was first launched. But nowadays 2D games thrive once more, people now learned to appreciate pixel art and even low resolution polygons.
Back in the day 2D games were considered obsolete. Yes, Saturn games have a different look and feel than PS1 games. I rather focus on the good games it left us. The console was not a success in North America, there's quite a bit of drama about what killed the Saturn: be it the complicated dual CPU, difficult third party development, high price, lack of a Sonic the Hedgehog game, the Sony PlayStation or all of the above. The Saturn was released in Japan in 1994 and one year later in North America and Europe, it's a 5th Generation 32 bit console, successor to the 16 bit SEGA Genesis (MegaDrive in Japan and PAL territories).
